Europa exploration diagramA hydrobot explores the ocean that is believed to exist beneath Europa's icy crust. Jupiter's RingsJupiter is encircled by a diffuse system of very faint rings, best observed when backlit by the sun. - painting by Don Dixon for Scientific American Crescent Jupiter over EuropaA crescent Jupiter is poised on the horizon of its icy moon Europa in this variation of artwork created for the May, 2004 cover of "Astronomy." Mixed 3d rendering and photography. I sculpted "icebergs" in clay and captured closeup video frames while the model was lit by a low sun. The various landscape elements were isolated in Photoshop and colorized to look like ice. Additional textures and details were also added in Photoshop. Jupiter and Io (seen in transit) were modeled in Strata Studio and then embellished in Photoshop. I intentionally created a low saturation image of Jupiter in an attempt to get a more realistic effect; Jupiter is generally rendered far too orange and gaudy. The colors here closely approximate what I observe in a telescope. © Don Dixon Io's Sodium AuroraIo's Sodium Aurora - sputtering of high energy particles from Jupiter's radiation belt ionize Io's surface and thin atmosphere. The resulting cloud is entrained by Jupiter's powerful magnetic field. 6x7 inch acrylic and gouache on illustration board, 1984. © Don Dixon Asteroids and CometsSaturn
